PCI Compliance Aids Third Party Verification Services

Payment Card Industry (PCI) compliance is a certification that has become standard for increasing controls around credit card data. It’s a seal of approval that will allow The Sales Verification Company to continue its expansion in providing the finest third party verification services in the industry.

But what do the standards mean, exactly, and where did they come from?
The Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard (PCI DSS) was born from five different programs, each designed by a major credit card holder to enhance security. Visa, Mastercard, American Express and the Japan Credit Bureau independently developed standards to ensure that merchants meet minimum levels of security when they store, process and transmit cardholder data.
In 2004, these companies combined their individual policies and issued the first set of PCI DSS standards. Those policies are amended periodically to address technological advances and changing business climates. The current standard is Version 2.0, which went into effect on Jan. 1, 2012.
Requirements to earn PCI compliance include:
• Install and maintain a firewall configuration to protect cardholder data • Encrypt transmission of cardholder data across open, public networks • Use and regularly update anti-virus software on all systems commonly affected by malware • Assign a unique ID to each person with computer access • Track and monitor all access to network resources and cardholder data • Restrict physical access to cardholder data
